SUMMARY:Mother Road to the Stars
DESCRIPTION:Route 66 is one of the most storied roadways in North America\, known for its roadside diners\, historic hotels and kitschy attractions. But it also boasts an extraordinary space heritage; along its course lies the birthplaces of space pioneers\, centers of space exploration and discovery\, training grounds for Moon-bound astronauts\, the best-preserved asteroid impact site in the world\, site of a famous UFO sighting\, and museums celebrating these cosmic connections. In honor of the centennial of the opening of Route 66\, Lowell Observatory Historian Kevin Schindler will lead a virtual trip along the Mother Road and explore this space heritage. \nKevin Schindler is the Historian and the Public Information Officer at Lowell Observatory. He has been with Lowell for more than 30 years and is an active member of the Flagstaff history and science communities. Kevin is a prolific science communicator and writer; he was one of the Grand Canyon’s Astronomers in Residence in 2023 and recently received the 2025 Copper Quill Award\, which honors local authors. Through decades of writing\, speaking\, and community engagement\, Kevin has such an important role in connecting the public with astronomy and the history of space exploration in northern Arizona.

SUMMARY:Worlds Revealed Speaker Series: How to Find Life\, From Antarctica to Mars
DESCRIPTION:Could Antarctica hold the secret to finding life on Mars? \nThe McMurdo Dry Valleys are the closest environment Earth has to that of the surface of Mars: brutally cold\, searingly dry\, and teeming with microscopic life that has no business surviving there. In this sequel talk\, discover how scientists are pushing the boundaries of astrobiology\, using Antarctica’s extremophiles to sharpen the tools we’ll one day use to detect life across the cosmos. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nGavin Moriarty is a second-year PhD student in Astronomy & Planetary Science at Northern Arizona University\, and is also pursuing his Science Communications certificate. As an Antarctic researcher\, he uses remote sensing techniques to study the McMurdo Dry Valleys and to constrain the environmental characteristics that support life\, in hopes of improving techniques for searching for life in the universe. With a B.S. in Astrophysics\, he is also passionate about the design and construction of astronomical instrumentation. As a passionate science educator\, he began participating in a variety of public outreach and community engagement programs very early in his career\, and is an accomplished team member in Lowell’s public program

SUMMARY:Asteroids\, Plankton and the Extinction of the Dinosaurs
DESCRIPTION:66 million years ago\, an asteroid larger than Mt. Everest crashed into what we now call the Yucatan Peninsula and triggered an ecological disaster that wiped out 70% of the species on Earth\, or so the story goes. In this presentation\, we’ll dig into the gory details of how a fringe idea becomes widely accepted\, and the surprising way this connects astronomers to micropaleontologists. \nRetired geology professor\, member of the Lowell Observatory Advisory Board\, and total science geek. Kent began his research career in the 1970’s studying one of Earth’s mass extinction events (the wrong one\, as it turns out)\, followed by post-doctoral fellowships at the Smithsonian and the University of Queensland in Australia. After retiring from his position as Chair of Earth Science at Cerritos Community College in Southern California\, Kent and his late wife Jill made the inspired decision to move permanently to Flagstaff in 2005.
