SUMMARY:Astronomy on Tap: Silver and Starlight with Ben Shafransky
DESCRIPTION:Astronomy on Tap: Silver and Starlight with Ben Shafransky\nJoin Lowell Observatory and Mother Road Brewing Co. on November 25th at 6:30pm for Astronomy on Tap! Listen to fascinating science talks\, play trivia to win out-of-this-world prizes\, and of course\, enjoy Mother Road brews on tap.  \nThis month’s speaker is Ben Shafransky. Ben is a Lowell Discovery Telescope Operator at Lowell Observatory. Ben will be talking about the history of early Astrophotography. Early photographic scientists looked up shortly after the invention of the photograph. Experiments to capture the sky yielded varying results until the birth of astrophotography was realized in 1840. The techniques and tools used to do this improved vastly over the next century until the point where a faint dwarf planet could eventually be found. Join Ben on this journey of exploration of firsts\, from the very first photograph to the first images of Pluto. \nWe’ll hold trivia after the talk\, where you’ll have the chance to win some fun prizes. As always\, there will be plenty of Mother Road brews on tap to enjoy. We’ll see you there! Come early\, seats fill up fast!

SUMMARY:Astronomy on Tap: How to Build a Planet with Two Suns
DESCRIPTION:Astronomy on Tap: How to Build a Planet with Two Suns with Dr. Taylor Kutra \nPlanet formation is never simple—but what happens when you throw a second star into the mix? Join Lowell astronomer Dr. Taylor Kutra for a fascinating look at how planets form in the most common stellar environments: multiple star systems. While most planet formation theories are based on single stars\, the reality is that most stars are born with companions. Dr. Kutra will dive into her research on young\, tightly bound binary systems\, where evolving circumstellar and circumbinary disks create an even more chaotic stage for planet birth. These small systems may be hard to spot\, but they offer big clues—and big challenges—for our understanding of planetary origins.

In this fun and accessible talk\, Dr. Teddy Kareta will build on the goofy outline of chaos that Jeff Goldblum’s character gives in Jurassic Park to explore all the ways that chaos plays out across the solar system — and what it says for the future of the Earth. \nWe’ll hold trivia after the talk\, where you”ll have the chance to win some fun prizes. SUMMARY:Astronomy on Tap: Unraveling the Solar Surface
DESCRIPTION:Join us at Mother Road Brewing Co. on the 26th at 6:30pm for this month’s Astronomy on Tap!\n\nJacob Hyden will be talking about his studies of the motions on the surface of the Sun! The Sun’s surface is constantly in motion like all other stars. We will see how using high-resolution observations of the Sun’s surface can help estimate other stellar motions. This stellar motion can then be used to find Earth-sized exoplanets!\n\nWe’ll hold trivia after the talk\, where you’ll have the chance to win some fun prizes. As always\, there will be plenty of Mother Road brews on tap to enjoy. We’ll see you there!

SUMMARY:Astronomy on Tap Flagstaff | Magnetic Fields on Other Worlds
DESCRIPTION:Join Lowell Observatory and Mother Road Brewing Co. on August 27th at 6:30pm for Astronomy on Tap! Listen to fascinating science talks\, play trivia to win out-of-this-world prizes\, and of course\, enjoy Mother Road brews on tap. \nThis month’s speaker is Lowell astronomer Dr. Melodie Kao\, who will talk about the magnetic fields of exoplanets! In 1958\, James Van Allen discovered zones of extreme radiation surrounding Earth. We now know that these invisible bubbles of high energy radiation cocooning Earth\, Jupiter\, Saturn\, Uranus\, Neptune\, and even tiny Ganymede are some of the most hazardous environments in the Solar System for both crewed and uncrewed space missions. Ten years later\, the Apollo 8 astronauts made the first human journey beyond the Van Allen Belts to orbit the moon. On the fifty-fifth anniversary of their discovery in 2023\, a team led by Lowell’s newest astronomer Dr. Melodie Kao found and imaged the first example of radiation belts outside of the Solar System. Come spend an evening exploring what they can tell us about the magnetic fields of exoplanets and the presence of volcanoes on worlds outside of our Solar System. We’ll see you there! \nLearn More
