SUMMARY:January Native Constellation Storytelling for Winter Skies
DESCRIPTION:Lowell Observatory and Grand Canyon Conservancy are proud to announce the second installment of “Native Constellation Storytelling for Winter Skies.” This unique and culturally enriching livestream event will take place on January 11 in collaboration with Grand Canyon Conservancy\, hosted by Lowell Observatory’s Public Information Officer and Historian\, Kevin Schindler\, in conversation with Gerald Dawavendewa\, a Hopi artist and author. \nSet a reminder to watch on Grand Canyon Conservancy’s YouTube channel! \nAbout Gerald \nGerald’s artwork includes “Codex Taawa”\, a series of illustrations inspired by ancient imagery that explores the cosmos of the Hopi people. Each piece highlights a part of the Hopi tradition\, stories\, or knowledge. For the Hopi\, the night sky is an astronomical calendar with all of its elements used to set ceremonies\, rituals\, seasons\, events\, and measures of time. The Hopi people have observed and measured the movements in the sky to create a complex guide to assist them with existing in this world\, known as Tuuwaqatsi ― the Fourth World. Through his artwork\, Gerald hopes to share his culture\, and educate the public about the rich heritage of his Native tribes\, and promote a greater understanding of the Native world.

SUMMARY:Shocked Poststarburst Galaxy Candidates
DESCRIPTION:Galaxies that are transitional between active star-forming and quiescent phases are known as shocked poststarburst galaxies. Antoniu Fodor of the University of Toledo—one of Lowell Observatory’s LDT institutional science partners—uses the LDT to identify and study them. Tonight\, he will join Lowell Historian Kevin Schindler to share the results of this research.

SUMMARY:How We Recoat the LDT’s 14-foot Primary Mirror
DESCRIPTION:The massive primary mirror of the Lowell Discovery Telescope (LDT) measures 14 feet in diameter by 4 inches thick. Yet its critical reflective layer is only 100 nanometers thick—1\,000 times thinner than typical photocopy paper! This aluminum skin must be periodically replaced\, a painstaking process that takes weeks to complete. SUMMARY:Lowell42 | Examining a Genius: The Triumph and Tragedy of Robert Burnham\, Jr.
DESCRIPTION:Lowell42 | Examining a Genius: The Triumph and Tragedy of Robert Burnham\, Jr. \nRobert Burnham\, Jr. compiled one of the most popular astronomy books ever—the three-volume observing bible\, Burnham’s Celestial Handbook—while working at Lowell Observatory in the mid-20th century. Yet Burnham was enigmatic and tragic in many ways.\n\nLowell Observatory Historian Kevin Schindler will host a panel discussion that explores Burnham\, what drove him\, and the personality of a genius.\n\nFlagstaff Mayor Paul Deasy will also be there to issue an official proclamation designating August 13 as Robert Burnham Jr. Day!\n\nPanelists include:\n\nJournalist Tony Ortega\, who in 1998 wrote the defining account of Burnham’s life\nDonna Courtney\, Burnham’s niece and only surviving relative\nDr. William Sheehan\, astronomy historian and retired psychiatrist\nBrian Skiff\, renowned sky expert who has worked for nearly 40 years at Lowell Observatory\n\nIf you can’t make it in person\, tune in on our YouTube channel!\nhttps://youtu.be/9TW4DntK0Ks
