SUMMARY:To Boldly Go… Well\, You Know: NASA’s Dawn Mission to the Main Asteroid Belt with Dr. Marc Rayman
DESCRIPTION:Worlds Revealed Speaker Series\nTo Boldly Go… Well\, You Know: NASA’s Dawn Mission to the Main Asteroid Belt with Dr. Marc Rayman\n\nJoin NASA’s Dr. Marc Rayman for an inside look at one of the most ambitious missions in the history of space exploration: the Dawn spacecraft. Dawn made history as the first mission to orbit two extraterrestrial destinations\, visiting Vesta (2011–2012) and Ceres (2015–2018)—the two largest bodies in the main asteroid belt. \nDiscover how Dawn revealed these uncharted worlds\, why Ceres is classified as a dwarf planet alongside Pluto\, and how cutting-edge ion propulsion technology—once the stuff of science fiction—made this groundbreaking journey possible. Dr. Marc Rayman\, who was the mission director and chief engineer (as well as a lifelong space enthusiast)\, will describe the mission and its unique use of ion propulsion as well as its two exotic destinations. He will also share the excitement and profundity of controlling a spacecraft in deep space. \nDon’t miss this fascinating talk about a mission that reshaped our understanding of the solar system. \n\n  \n\n\n*This talk is included with general admission*

SUMMARY:New Horizons in Perspective | Dr. Alan Stern
DESCRIPTION:Worlds Revealed Speaker Series\n“Double Header: New Horizons in Perspective (With a Recent News Update) and Why My Spaceflight in 2023 Was the Vanguard of a New Era in Scientific Research in Space” with Dr. Alan Stern\nIn this double header presentation\, Dr. Alan Stern will begin by reviewing the mission of New Horizons\, the first mission to explore the Pluto system and the Kuiper Belt. He will explain how the mission was accomplished\, what it revealed\, and how New Horizons fits into the broader context of solar system exploration. He will conclude this first portion of the presentation with a look at upcoming plans for New Horizons in the years ahead. \nThe second part of the presentation will tell the story of Dr. Stern’s 2023 rookie spaceflight aboard Virgin Galactic mission 05\, and why research conducted by researchers themselves flying in space will be so transformational for science in the years and decades to come. \n\n\n\n\n*This talk is included with general admission*

SUMMARY:The Search for Planet Nine | Dr. Wes Ryle
DESCRIPTION:Worlds Revealed Speaker Series\n \nThe Search for Planet Nine with Dr. Wes Ryle \n\nOver a century ago\, Percival Lowell began the quest for a hidden world at the edge of our Solar System – a search that ultimately led Clyde Tombaugh to discover Pluto in 1930. Today\, a new generation of astronomers is following in their footsteps\, hunting for evidence of another mysterious planet lurking far beyond Neptune. Join Cincinnati Observatory astronomer Dr. Wes Ryle for a journey through the history of Planet X\, the clues pointing to a possible new Planet Nine\, and what the future might hold for one of astronomy’s greatest ongoing mysteries.\n\n\n*This talk is included with general admission

SUMMARY:Member Event | Saturn Soiree
DESCRIPTION:Member Event | Saturn Soiree\nOn September 20\, Lowell Observatory will be hosting a member-only private viewing through our Dyer telescope from 8:30PM-10PM.  The focus of this viewing? Saturn at opposition. \n What does it mean for Saturn to be at opposition? \nSaturn is at opposition when it lies opposite from the Sun in the sky. When at opposition\, Saturn is also at perigee – its closest point to Earth.  This makes it appear its biggest and brightest\, giving incredible potential for viewing. \nKeep an eye on your emails\, RSVP invitations will be going out soon! \nBecome a Member

SUMMARY:How to Build a Planet When You Have Two Suns | Dr. Taylor Kutra
DESCRIPTION:Worlds Revealed Speaker Series\n \nHow to Build a Planet When You Have Two Suns with Dr. Taylor Kutra \nPlanet formation is already a messy\, complex process—and that’s in the “simple” case of a single star. But most stars don’t form alone. The majority are born in multiple star systems\, meaning that if we want to understand how planets form across the Galaxy\, we need to figure out what happens when stars have companions. In this talk\, Dr. Taylor Kutra explores how the presence of a second star—especially in young\, close binary systems—complicates an already messy process. She’ll share insights from her recent work characterizing tiny\, evolving circumstellar and circumbinary disks. These systems may be small\, but they punch well above their weight in challenging our theories of how planets come to be.\n\n*This talk is included with general admission*
