SUMMARY:Flagstaff Festival of Science | A River Cutting through Time and the Strata Bounding the 66 Million-Year-Old Impact Event that Extinguished Dinosaurs (Admission Not Required/Free To Public)
DESCRIPTION:Many Colorado River runners find themselves drawn to the geology cut by the river. It is easy to become fascinated by the different strata\, their colors\, and how they shape the canyon walls that bound the river. But the geology of the river is more than a rock record. It is a biological treatise of the world. As one floats by exposed strata\, one is provided a fascinating glimpse of how life emerged and evolved across our planet. While we often tell riverside tales of the plants and animals fossilized in the rock\, we often overlook those dramatic moments when the rock record is punctuated by mass extinctions. \nThis evening\, the locations of those events along the river will be briefly described before we focus on the calamitous cause of one of those mass extinctions: the Chicxulub impact cratering event that generated a global environmental calamity and extinguished most life on Earth 66 million years ago. Hear one of the discoverers of the Chicxulub crater describe how that impact event caused wildfires\, acid rain\, and a warmer climate in the region now drained by the Colorado River. Presented by Dr. David Kring\, who has been studying and teaching Arizona geology for 30 years.\n \nLocation: Lowell Observatory\, at the Giclas Lecture Hall in the Steele Visitor Center\, 1400 W Mars Hill Rd.

SUMMARY:Flagstaff Festival of Science | Going With the Flow: The Wayward Course of the Colorado River Through Time
DESCRIPTION:Tuesday\, September 6\, 2022\n7:00 PM  8:00 PM\n\nThrough the last 70 million years the Colorado River has evolved\, changed its flow direction\, and added tributaries. And our geologic understanding of the rivers history is also changing. Ancestors to the modern river system could only have come into being after the withdrawal of the Western Interior Seaway\, about 70 million years ago. At this time\, the ancestors flowed northeast. Geologists “lose sight” of the river by about 33 million years ago and it does not reappear until about 5 million years ago\, when it is making its way to the Gulf of California. Join geologist Wayne Ranney for a fascinating look of how the Colorado River evolved.\nLocation: Lowell Observatory\, at the Giclas Lecture Hall in the Steele Visitor Center\, 1400 W Mars Hill Rd.

SUMMARY:Documentary Screening (and Q&A after) by Filmmaker George Sibley
DESCRIPTION:William Herschel and the Universe – A Documentary Film by George Sibley\nWilliam Herschel\, a 42 year old musician and amateur astronomer\, discovered the first “new” planet in history in 1781. His telescopes\, observations and theories transformed what was the clockwork universe imagined by Isaac Newton into the evolutionary and wonder-filled cosmos we know today. This is the story of how modern astronomy took shape under the pre-industrial skies of the 18th century. \nJoin us on June 24\, 2022 for an exclusive chance to view this film with the filmmaker himself! George will be taking questions after the film\, so don’t miss out. \nFree with purchase of a general admission ticket. \n\nWatch the trailer below!\n\nhttps://lowell.edu/wp-content/uploads/2022/06/Herschel-Trailer.mp4
