SUMMARY:How We Recoat the LDT’s 14-foot Primary Mirror
DESCRIPTION:The massive primary mirror of the Lowell Discovery Telescope (LDT) measures 14 feet in diameter by 4 inches thick. Yet its critical reflective layer is only 100 nanometers thick—1\,000 times thinner than typical photocopy paper! This aluminum skin must be periodically replaced\, a painstaking process that takes weeks to complete. Tonight\, LDT Engineering Manager Frank Cornelius will join Lowell Historian Kevin Schindler to d

SUMMARY:Documentary Screening (and Q&A after) by Filmmaker George Sibley
DESCRIPTION:William Herschel and the Universe – A Documentary Film by George Sibley\nWilliam Herschel\, a 42 year old musician and amateur astronomer\, discovered the first “new” planet in history in 1781. This is the story of how modern astronomy took shape under the pre-industrial skies of the 18th century. \nJoin us on June 24\, 2022 for an exclusive chance to view this film with the filmmaker himself! George will be taking questions after the film\, so don’t miss out. \nFree with purchase of a general admission ticket. \n\nWatch the trailer below!\n\nhttps://lowell.edu/wp-content/uploads/2022/06/Herschel-Trailer.mp4

SUMMARY:Little Galaxy on the Celestial Prairie: Using the Lowell Discovery Telescope to Study Dwarf Galaxies
DESCRIPTION:While the Milky Way Galaxy contains several hundred billion stars\, dwarf galaxies have only 1\,000 to a few billion. To better understand these diminutive families of stars and how they form\, scientists use some of the world’s most powerful instruments. Tonight\, Dr. Deidre Hunter and Haylee Archer will join Lowell Historian Kevin Schindler to share how they’ve explored these tiny galaxies with the Lowell Discovery Telescope. This free program will be available to watch via a livestream feed on Lowell Observatory’s YouTube station.

SUMMARY:A Decade of Discovery | Searching For Planets Around Other Stars
DESCRIPTION:For millennia\, humans have asked the question\, “Are we alone?” One step in answering this question involves searching for and studying exoplanets—planets around stars other than our Sun. The Lowell Discovery Telescope (LDT) is ideal for such a study. One project\, for instance\, combines the power of the LDT with a Yale University-built instrument called EXPRES to detect earth-sized planets. Tonight\, our panel of experts—Dr. Joe Llama\, Dr. Catherine Clark\, and Dr. Debra Fischer—will join Lowell Historian Kevin Schindler to discuss how they use the LDT in their cutting-edge studies of exoplanets.

SUMMARY:Lowell 42: Imagining the Future of Space with Ed Finn
DESCRIPTION:The stars have never been closer: even elementary school students have sent satellites to orbit\, and the costs of launching are dropping dramatically. What happens when we see space as a canvas for human imagination? In this talk\, we will voyage to several space futures we dreamed up at ASU’s Center for Science and the Imagination and find out what they can teach us about the universe\, ourselves\, and life on Spaceship Earth. \nJoin in on this event in person in Lowell Observatory’s Giclas Lecture Hall for the price of general admission\, or watch it live from anywhere in the world on YouTube!

SUMMARY:I♥Pluto Festival 2022 | Lesson Learned from Observing Earth’s Cryosphere from Satellites
DESCRIPTION:Over the past few decades\, the quality and quantity of satellite observations of Earth have improved dramatically. Nowhere is this more true than in the polar regions. Over the past 20 years\, a fleet of satellites operated by many different countries have provided unprecedented insight into the changes underway in the Arctic and Antarctic. In this talk\, we will discuss some of the key observations and insights that inform our understanding of the response of the Greenland and Antarctic Ice Sheets to climate change and our projections of future sea-level rise. SUMMARY:I♥Pluto Festival 2022 | The Rivers and Seas of Titan
DESCRIPTION:Saturn’s moon Titan is the second known Solar system world with active rivers and seas. Titan’s deceptively Earth-like landscape is the product of a methane cycle akin to Earth’s water cycle\, but there are important differences between Earth and Titan that offer lessons about planetary climate. I will illustrate this through a tour of Titan’s landforms\, including methane rivers eroding mountains of ice\, the search for waves on Titan’s seas\, and the scarceness of river deltas.
