SUMMARY:Astronomy on Tap Flagstaff | Magnetic Fields on Other Worlds
DESCRIPTION:Join Lowell Observatory and Mother Road Brewing Co. on August 27th at 6:30pm for Astronomy on Tap! Listen to fascinating science talks\, play trivia to win out-of-this-world prizes\, and of course\, enjoy Mother Road brews on tap. \nThis month’s speaker is Lowell astronomer Dr. Melodie Kao\, who will talk about the magnetic fields of exoplanets! In 1958\, James Van Allen discovered zones of extreme radiation surrounding Earth. We now know that these invisible bubbles of high energy radiation cocooning Earth\, Jupiter\, Saturn\, Uranus\, Neptune\, and even tiny Ganymede are some of the most hazardous environments in the Solar System for both crewed and uncrewed space missions. Ten years later\, the Apollo 8 astronauts made the first human journey beyond the Van Allen Belts to orbit the moon. On the fifty-fifth anniversary of their discovery in 2023\, a team led by Lowell’s newest astronomer Dr. Melodie Kao found and imaged the first example of radiation belts outside of the Solar System. Come spend an evening exploring what they can tell us about the magnetic fields of exoplanets and the presence of volcanoes on worlds outside of our Solar System. We’ll see you there! \nLearn More

SUMMARY:Festival of Science Free Day at Lowell Observatory
DESCRIPTION:Enjoy Free General Admission to Lowell!\nEach year\, the Festival features 10-days of engaging events and programs\, all free\, for the community to enjoy and celebrate the wonders of science! \nThis year’s theme is “Accelerating Innovation”! On Monday\, September 23\, Lowell Observatory will be hosting a FREE general admission day from open to close. \nSpecial Science Talks \n4:30pm | Space Age Exploration with Klaus Brasch and William Sheehan\n(45 minutes)\nUnique stories of people thrilled as youngsters by the launch of Sputnik in 1957\, which triggered the race to the Moon between America and the Soviet Union during the cold war. Many became scientists involved in the exploration of the Moon and Solar System\, about which little was known at the time. Theirs are histories of a golden age of exploration which is still underway. \nA bioscientist with a lifelong interest in astronomy\, Klaus Brasch\, PhD\, joined the Royal Astronomical Society of Canada as a teenager and was hooked. After retiring from California State University\, San Bernardino\, Klaus joined Lowell Observatory as docent in its public program. He has written and lectured widely on topics ranging from astrophotography to life in the universe. Asteroid 25226-Brasch was named in recognition of his service at Lowell. \nWilliam Sheehan is a retired psychiatrist\, astronomical historian\, and amateur astronomer. He has published 20 books on astronomy\, including most recently Venus (with Sanjay Limaye)\, Discovering Mars (with Jim Bell)\, Discovering Pluto (with Dale Cruikshank)\, and Saturn. He was a Guggenheim fellow in 2001\, a recipient of the Gold Medal of the Oriental Astronomical Association\, and has been honored with an asteroid\, 16037 Sheehan\, which was discovered at Anderson Mesa in 1995. \n5:30pm | Exploring Oceans with Michael Bland\n(45 mins)\nNASA’s Europa Clipper mission launches this October\, beginning a 10-year journey to explore Europa from its surface to the ocean hidden below. Find out how we can investigate an extraterrestrial ocean we cannot see or touch\, and learn about Flagstaff’s role in planning and executing the mission. \nMike Bland is a research space scientist at the U.S. Geological Survey Astrogeology Science Center. His interests primarily lie in combining numerical models with planetary datasets to understand the thermal and tectonic evolution of ice-rich bodies.

SUMMARY:Dr. Qicheng Zhang at Heritage Starfest 2024
DESCRIPTION:Started in 2010\, this annual festival celebrates the amazing night skies of Capitol Reef and surrounding Wayne County. Come learn more about astronomy\, our connection to the night sky\, and how darkness is important to the health of all living things. \nHosted by Capitol Reef National Park and the Entrada Institute\, this year’s event will take place on September 27th and 28th. \nActivities and events are free and will take place both in the park and in the nearby town of Torrey\, 11 miles west of the visitor center. \nLowell Observatory astronomer Dr. Qicheng Zhang will give a talk called ‘The Anatomy of a Great Comet’ in the Visitor Center Theater! Comets occasionally produce spectacular visual displays with ghostly tails stretching many degrees across the night sky\, and one such bright comet may only be a week away

SUMMARY:The Accelerating Expanding Universe: Dark Matter\, Dark Energy\, and Einstein’s Cosmological Constant
DESCRIPTION:Dark energy is the leading candidate for the mechanism that is responsible for causing the cosmological expansion to accelerate. Bharat Ratra will describe the astronomical data which persuade cosmologists that (as yet undetected) dark energy and dark matter are by far the main components of the energy budget of the universe at the present time. He will review how these observations have led to the development of a quantitative “standard” model of cosmology that describes the evolution of the universe from an early epoch of inflation to the complex hierarchy of structure seen today. In this non-technical talk\, he will also discuss the basic physics\, and the history of ideas\, on which this model is based.
