SUMMARY:Worlds Revealed Speaker Series: No Rockets Required
DESCRIPTION:No Rockets Required: How We Built a Lunar Landscape in Northern Arizona with Dr. Amber Gullikson\nTerrestrial analog sites are like test-driving another planet—right here on Earth. Scientists use these locations to recreate alien environments\, where they can try out new technologies\, study how landscapes form\, and practice how humans and robots will explore unfamiliar terrain. Often set in rugged\, remote places\, these sites let researchers solve problems and refine their tools long before leaving Earth—saving time\, money\, and a lot of risk—while also giving the public a chance to see space exploration up close. Built in the 1960s to look like the Moon\, the Cinder Lake crater fields near Flagstaff\, Arizona\, are one of these unique sites. With its flat\, ash-covered surface\, Cinder Lake became a stand-in for the lunar landscape\, where astronauts learned how to navigate and do fieldwork without obvious landmarks—an essential skill in a place where GPS doesn’t exist. Still used for training and research\, this site helps prepare the next generation for missions to the Moon and Mars while preserving an important piece of space exploration history. \nStep into a universe of discovery with Worlds Revealed\, Lowell Observatory’s exclusive speaker series. This engaging program invites diverse staff and experts to share their unique perspectives\, bridging the gap between science\, art\, and exploration. Learn about exciting topics like the intersection of music and astronomy\, the operations behind our world-class telescopes\, or unexpected connections like animals and stars\, Worlds Revealed offers a captivating inside look at the ideas and stories that inspire wonder and shape our understanding of the cosmos.

SUMMARY:Worlds Revealed Speaker Series: Magnetic Mayhem
DESCRIPTION:Magnetic Mayhem: How Young Stars Make Life Difficult for Their Planets with Dr. Clara Brasseur\nIn this talk\, Dr. Clara Brasseur will explore the intense magnetic environments of young stars and how they dictate the survival of nearby worlds. While measuring a star’s surface is possible\, mapping its hot outer atmosphere (the corona) is a much greater challenge. Dr. Brasseur will share how her team used the surface of AB Doradus (a young star similar to an infant version of our Sun) as a blueprint to build a 3D model of its corona. \nBy comparing this model to real-world radio telescope observations\, they confirmed the existence of a massive “magnetic bubble” stretching 8 to 10 times the star’s width. Dr. Brasseur will discuss the exciting implications for habitability: since many planets orbit directly inside these high-energy bubbles\, their early exposure to this “magnetic mayhem” likely played a defining role in shaping their atmospheres and their potential to support life.

SUMMARY:Worlds Revealed Speaker Series: Mother Road to the Stars
DESCRIPTION:(Mother) Road to the Stars: Route 66 and its Space Heritage with Kevin Schindler\nRoute 66 is one of the most storied roadways in North America\, known for its roadside diners\, historic hotels and kitschy attractions. But it also boasts an extraordinary space heritage; along its course lies the birthplaces of space pioneers\, centers of space exploration and discovery\, training grounds for Moon-bound astronauts\, the best-preserved asteroid impact site in the world\, site of a famous UFO sighting\, and museums celebrating these cosmic connections. In honor of the centennial of the opening of Route 66\, Lowell Observatory Historian Kevin Schindler will lead a virtual trip along the Mother Road and explore this space heritage.
