SUMMARY:Flagstaff Festival of Science | A River Cutting through Time and the Strata Bounding the 66 Million-Year-Old Impact Event that Extinguished Dinosaurs (Admission Not Required/Free To Public)
DESCRIPTION:Many Colorado River runners find themselves drawn to the geology cut by the river. It is easy to become fascinated by the different strata\, their colors\, and how they shape the canyon walls that bound the river. But the geology of the river is more than a rock record. It is a biological treatise of the world. As one floats by exposed strata\, one is provided a fascinating glimpse of how life emerged and evolved across our planet. While we often tell riverside tales of the plants and animals fossilized in the rock\, we often overlook those dramatic moments when the rock record is punctuated by mass extinctions. \nThis evening\, the locations of those events along the river will be briefly described before we focus on the calamitous cause of one of those mass extinctions: the Chicxulub impact cratering event that generated a global environmental calamity and extinguished most life on Earth 66 million years ago. Hear one of the discoverers of the Chicxulub crater describe how that impact event caused wildfires\, acid rain\, and a warmer climate in the region now drained by the Colorado River. DESCRIPTION:Tuesday\, September 6\, 2022\n7:00 PM  8:00 PM\n\nThrough the last 70 million years the Colorado River has evolved\, changed its flow direction\, and added tributaries. And our geologic understanding of the rivers history is also changing. Ancestors to the modern river system could only have come into being after the withdrawal of the Western Interior Seaway\, about 70 million years ago. At this time\, the ancestors flowed northeast. Geologists “lose sight” of the river by about 33 million years ago and it does not reappear until about 5 million years ago\, when it is making its way to the Gulf of California. DESCRIPTION:Meteor Crater and Lowell Observatory in Flagstaff\, Arizona\, set the stage for a fantastic Asteroid Day celebration. Flagstaff’s “Big Impact Event” will highlight the Meteor Crater\, formed 50\,000 years ago\, representing the best preserved meteor impact site in the world. Meteor Crater is 700 feet deep\, more than an astronomical 4\,000 feet across\, and 2.4 miles in circumference. Lowell Observatory\, a 128-year-old astronomical observatory in Flagstaff\, Arizona\, studies near-earth asteroids and has discovered roughly 30\,000 asteroids and about 40 comets in our solar system. He is a renowned educator\, author\, national popularizer of astronomy and an expert in observational astronomy. \nFrom 2010-2019 Dean was the co-host of the PBS program Star Gazers. He is the author of four books including “Facts From Space!” and “100 Things to See in the Night Sky”. Dean is a Contributing Editor to Sky and Telescope Magazine and a contributor to Astronomy Magazine\, where he won 2008 “Out-of-this-World” Award for astronomy education. Dean has written over 160 astronomy articles for the Cincinnati Enquirer\, blogged for the Huffington Post and is regularly featured on television and radio. The Lowell Discovery Telescope (LDT) is ideal for such a study.
