SUMMARY:2024 Eclipse Over Texas
DESCRIPTION:  \nA total solar eclipse will take place on April 8\, 2024 and Texas is an ideal location for viewing this rare celestial display. Lowell Observatory is teaming with the City of Waco\, Baylor University\, and Discovery on a public event\, Eclipse Over Texas 2024. This will include an onsite celebration at Baylor University’s McLane Stadium in Waco\, as well as virtual programming that people around the world may view. \nEclipse Over Texas: Live from Waco will consist of presentations by astronomers and science educators\, interactive activities\, and safe telescope viewing of the Sun as it progresses through the eclipse. The partial phase of the solar eclipse will begin at 12:20 pm CDT\, as seen from Waco\, Texas. The Sun’s surface will gradually be covered until totality begins at 1:38 pm CDT. This will last for four minutes and 13 seconds\, after which the Sun will begin its gradual move out of the Moon’s shadow\, ending at 2 pm CDT.

SUMMARY:From Lead to Gold: The Alchemy of the Stars
DESCRIPTION:Science Talk | From Lead to Gold: The Alchemy of the Stars\nWhen Carl Sagan once said\, “The cosmos is within us. We are made of star-stuff\,” he meant it literally! Nearly all the atoms that make up us\, and everything around us\, are created in the fiery death of exploding stars. PhD Candidate Sam Usman will talk about how these elements are made\, how we learn about them and what’s left to be uncovered. \nTalk is included with general admission! \nAbout Sam Usman \nSam Usman is a PhD candidate at the University of Chicago. During her undergrad and masters programs\, she did research on gravitational waves with LIGO. She has since moved from the dark side to the light\, using optical telescopes to observe stars in Milky Way globular clusters and the outer halo. For her thesis\, she studies chemical patterns unique to dense star clusters and their remnants. In her free time\, she enjoys doing agility courses with her dog\, making ceramic mugs and vases\, competing in Brazilian jiu jitsu and playing games with her wife. \n  \n  \n  \n  \n  \n
