Zeke Bandelier studies hydrated chlorine salt distribution on Mars. These salts can depress the freezing point of water, allowing liquid water to exist on the red planet. Hydrated minerals have already been detected but distinguishing chlorine salts from other minerals such as sulfates is necessary due to the large change in water stability. Bandelier is working on this problem with Dr. Jennifer Hanley of Lowell Observatory.
