Revolutionize astronomy research

Lowell Observatory is planning to acquire a new robotic 1-meter telescope at our Anderson Mesa research site. The new telescope will replace the 31-inch facility that served Lowell astronomers for more than 50 years.

The capabilities and speed of robotic telescopes promise to revolutionize how astronomy research is conducted. Robotic telescopes are able to rapidly change coordinates and track passing astronomical phenomena. Lowell plans to acquire multiple 1-meter class telescopes in the future and orchestrating several of these to observe the same phenomenon provides even more possibilities.

Thanks to a generous donation, the facility will be named the Peggy and Eric Johnson Telescope. We are still seeking gifts in support of telescope instrumentation which we estimate will cost $350,000. We aim to bring the telescope online in summer 2022.
