Preserve Lowell History

Lowell Observatory is seeking to restore the 1909 Lampland telescope and dome. The Lampland Dome sits just beyond what will be the north exit of our new Kemper and Ethel Marley Foundation Astronomy Discovery Center. Restoring the Lampland telescope and dome will give more than 200,000 annual visitors to Lowell their first glimpse of the incredible astronomical history here on Mars Hill.

The budget for this project is $600,000 and includes:

  • Carefully restoring the dome’s frame
  • Installing a canvas dome cover similar to the original material
  • Restoring the 42-inch telescope frame
  • Reinstalling the telescope frame in the dome
  • Constructing a ramp entrance
  • Developing and installing interpretive signage
  • Developing historic exhibits

The project will take six months and will be completed in time for the grand opening of the new Astronomy Discovery Center.
