This public observing plaza is home to six advanced telescopes, offering breathtaking views of celestial objects under the dark skies of Arizona. Explore rich star fields, colorful planets, and detailed nebulae and galaxies, all made vivid by Flagstaff’s internationally recognized dark skies.

Discoveries to Be Made, Day or Night

Beyond nighttime stargazing, the Open Deck Observatory offers engaging daytime exhibits on the science of spectroscopy, the types of telescopes astronomers use, and essential tips for preserving dark skies in Arizona. The observatory also features a unique solar alignment display, where six plinths along the plaza mark the positions of the Sun during sunrise and sunset on the equinoxes and solstices.
