Lowell Observatory and Grand Canyon Conservancy to Host Livestream: “Saving the Night: Protecting Dark Skies in Our National Parks”

This free, expert-led virtual panel discussion on April 22 will explore the effects of artificial light on ecosystems, the importance of conserving dark skies for the wellbeing of life on Earth, and the ongoing efforts by Grand Canyon National Park to safeguard this precious natural resource.
Flagstaff, AZ – Lowell Observatory and Grand Canyon Conservancy are teaming up to present a captivating livestream that highlights how conserving dark skies helps wildlife thrive, maintains ecological balance, honors cultural traditions, and ensures that future generations can enjoy unspoiled views of the night sky.

Panel participants will include former Grand Canyon Astronomers in Residence Dean Regas, Lauren Camp, Kevin Schindler, and Dark Sky Ranger Rader Lane. Their insightful discussion coincides with National Park Week and International Dark Sky Week.

Astronomy enthusiasts, nature lovers, and advocates for environmental preservation are all welcome to join and may participate by asking questions and sharing their own perspectives.

For years, sky watchers have stressed the importance of reducing artificial light to observe and study the universe. Recently, scientists have confirmed that light pollution not only diminishes our ability to view celestial wonders but also disrupts life—including human health—on Earth.

National parks often boast some of the darkest skies on the planet, offering awe-inspiring vistas of the Milky Way, planets, and far-off galaxies. Grand Canyon National Park, the first certified International Dark Sky Park, exemplifies the commitment to protecting these remarkable skies through dark sky programming, educational outreach, and sustainability initiatives.

“Few places on Earth have night skies like Grand Canyon, where the Milky Way stretches across the horizon, visible to the naked eye,” says Lauren Cisneros, Marketing Coordinator for Grand Canyon Conservancy. “As light pollution threatens dark skies globally, this panel brings together passionate experts to discuss why safeguarding our night skies and our national parks is crucial.”

Dr. Amanda Bosh, Executive Director at Lowell Observatory, emphasizes the importance of public awareness. “Artificial light pollution is no longer just an astronomer’s concern. It affects all of us, and everyone can help mitigate its impacts. Education is the first step toward meaningful change.”
