Lowell Observatory is excited to announce a special opening for the 2024 Great American Solar Eclipse on April 8. With a partial view of approximately 68% magnitude from Flagstaff, Arizona, the observatory invites the public and media to join in witnessing this striking celestial event.

Event Highlights Include:

  • Solar Observing: Safely observe the eclipse with solar glasses and through our specialized solar telescopes, which will be set up around campus
  • Meet an Astronomer: With Dr. Amanda Bosh and Dr. Stephen Levine
  • Food Trucks: Coffee and burritos from Single Speed Coffee Roasters and Express Burritos
  • Live Views of totality from Waco, TX
  • Campus Scavenger Hunt

2024 Great American Solar Eclipse Schedule:

  • Begins: 10:12 am
  • Maximum: 11:23 am
  • Ends: 12:37 am
  • Duration: 2 hours, 25 minutes

*Please note that in Flagstaff we will not witness a total solar eclipse. At the time of the maximum eclipse the sun will be 68% covered.

✦ Hire A Ride or Carpool

Please note that there will be limited parking for this event. We suggest that you show up early and carpool to the event or hire an Uber or Lyft for transportation.

In addition to our main parking lot, we will have additional parking at the Church of Jesus Christ and Latter Day Saints on Cherry Hill with shuttle services to Mars Hill.

✦Wear Your Solar Shades

It is important to wear these any time you are looking toward the Sun, even when the Moon is covering the majority of the Sun’s surface. Looking directly at the Sun during the eclipse will cause eye damage.

Do not look at the sun or the eclipse without your solar glasses on.
