Historic Clark Telescope Viewing

View the Night Sky Through a Piece of History.

Built in 1896 by Alvan Clark & Sons, the Clark Telescope is one of Lowell Observatory’s oldest and most iconic instruments. Percival Lowell himself used it to study the surface of Mars, sparking massive public interest in astronomy and inspiring science fiction writers for generations. It also played a role in one of the most groundbreaking discoveries in modern astronomy when astronomer Vesto Slipher used it to observe the Andromeda Galaxy and uncover the first evidence that the universe is expanding.

The 24-inch Clark Refractor even contributed to the Apollo 11 mission, helping scientists map the Moon’s surface and prepare astronauts for their historic lunar landing.

Today, this legendary telescope is dedicated entirely to giving visitors a spectacular view of the night sky — the very same lens that helped to shape our understanding of the universe is yours to look through.
